Music School - Workshops Once every school term, the students participate in a group workshop, giving the students the opportunity to expand their musical horizons, while also socialising in similar-age groups. Students are encouraged to experiment with instruments other than their own: the guitarist can have a go on the drums, while the drummer might have a go with the keyboards! Some of the workshops are themed around a central subject. In Term 4 of 2007, for example, students aged 5 to 15 were introduced to the gamelan – an traditional Indonesian musical ensemble of percussion instruments. The students were then given an opportunity to play, improvise and experiment with gamelan instruments. Leading the workshop were Perth visual artists Anna and Cory Gath, who then went on to guide the students through painting the sounds of the gamelan, by subjectively relating sound and colour. The result of the workshop – a collection of unique paintings created by the students – was displayed at the Genesis vegetarian restaurant in December of 2007. |
